Climate change is here, now, and it’s accelerating. Scientists tell us we have less than a decade before climate change crosses thresholds that are much more dangerous and harder to respond to.

At its core, Groundswell funds climate action to keep fossil fuels in the ground and accelerate a just transition to a decarbonised world. Because you can’t bank on one project to fix climate change, we fund and support an entire ecosystem to collectively work together.

Since launching in 2020, the Groundswell community has raised and distributed over $2 million to grassroots climate advocacy right across the country, collectively building momentum for ambitious climate action.

Recent big wins

Since Comms Declare launched their Fossil Ad Ban campaign, 12 Australian councils, including the City of Sydney, have voted to ban fossil fuel advertising and sponsorships. Recently the organisation launched a campaign aimed at federal politicians calling for national bans that prevent future fossil fuel marketing,

Victoria Forest Alliance built a strong community campaign for an immediate end to native logging to reduce emissions and protect carbon sinks. In May 2023, the Daniel Andrews government announced native logging was environmentally unviable and it would be shutting down the industry in January 2024, six years earlier than scheduled.

Gudanji for Country launched Gudanji Bush Trips with the intention to connect key climate activists with Gudanji people and build a strong network of allies across the climate movement to help stop fracking in the Beetaloo Basin, NT. The inaugural trip took place in July 2023 and resulted in new legal and research collaborations to protect Country.

Grata is supporting Uncle Pabai and Uncle Paul’s Australian Climate Case – two Traditional Owners and Native Title rights holders from the islands of Boigu and Saibai in Zenadth Kes (the Torres Strait) suing the Australian Government for negligence. If successful, this may force the government to reduce emissions in line with the best available science.

In 2023, Climate Media Centre spokespeople reached millions of Australians in 15,000 media items, describing the urgent need for action on climate change from various points of view, from parents to energy finance experts, elevating climate solutions in the media and public conversation.

Farmers for Climate Action is one of the most influential climate groups in Australia. From their community around the country to their advocacy work in Canberra, they’re not only growing the number of farmers who are leading on climate-smart farming solutions, they’re helping politicians across the spectrum implement strong economy-wide climate policy.
