No New Gas NT
$40,000 | July 2021
What do Environment Centre of NT do?
ECNT’s mission is to inspire, support and take action that protects the environment. This project, the “No New Gas” campaign, responds to the Australian and NT Government plans to “gas-fire” the NT’s economy. The campaign will build community opposition to new gas-based projects planned for pristine Darwin Harbour, and garner support for an alternative renewable-powered industrial precinct for Middle Arm.
Why is this work important?
The Northern Territory is at the frontline of government plans for a ‘gas-fired recovery’, notwithstanding that climate change is already leading to unliveable conditions in the NT.
There is little knowledge in the community about these proposed developments, or their impacts. A strategic environmental assessment process for the proposed precinct will begin in the next twelve months, and will provide a key opportunity for public mobilisation around these plans.
How is Groundswell supporting this work?
With this grant, ECNT will run a public facing campaign to smash the social licence for new gas-based developments in Darwin Harbour. This would involve three key strategies:
Raising community awareness of and opposition to new gas-based developments in Darwin Harbour under the banner “No New Gas”
Lobbying to ensure politicians and bureaucrats understand the lack of social licence for new gas-based projects
Garnering community and political support for an alternative vision of non-polluting, renewable-powered industrial precinct for Middle Arm, which ECNT is currently working on with 350.org and NT unions.
