What do Ngardara Cooperative do?
Ngardara Cooperative is spearheading Australia's first First Nations majority-owned utility-scale solar microgrid in Borroloola, Northern Territory. This transformative project not only addresses energy insecurity in remote communities but also sets a precedent for Indigenous-led renewable energy solutions that prioritise self-determination and community benefit.
Why is this work important?
Despite holding land rights over much of Australia, First Nations communities are often excluded from the economic and environmental benefits of the clean energy transition. Ngardara Cooperative’s project showcases a model of Indigenous leadership in renewable energy, where power, wealth, and opportunity remain within the community. By tackling energy poverty, fostering local employment, and advocating for community-owned solutions, this initiative demonstrates how First Nations communities can play a pivotal role in addressing climate change.
How is Groundswell supporting this work?
Groundswell’s funding will support Ngardara Cooperative’s organisational capacity as the project progresses through regulatory and financial milestones. This includes:
Sustaining key leadership roles.
Providing governance and accredited training for community members, including Renewable Energy Pathways certifications, to prepare residents for employment in the energy sector.
Developing energy literacy resources to help Borroloola residents optimise energy use and reduce costs with the new microgrid system.
Supporting travel for community members to participate in stakeholder negotiations, ensuring local voices are represented in key decision-making processes.
