What do Market Forces do?

Market Forces works to cut off the financial support that enables fossil fuel projects, exposing and challenging the banks, super funds, and insurers backing destructive coal, oil, and gas developments. By mobilising communities and amplifying their voices, Market Forces aims to end the expansion of fossil fuels and accelerate the global shift to renewable energy.

Their work spans Australia and Southeast Asia, targeting high-profile projects like Santos’ Barossa gas development. Collaborating with grassroots communities, including Traditional Owners, they ensure local voices are central to their campaigns. By delaying or cancelling projects, Market Forces weakens the viability of fossil fuel expansion and strengthens momentum for clean energy investment.

Why is this work important?

Stopping new fossil fuel projects is critical to avoiding catastrophic climate impacts. Yet Australian banks and international financiers continue to support expansions that threaten ecosystems, undermine Indigenous rights, and lock in decades of emissions. Market Forces’ work is pivotal in exposing these practices and holding financial institutions accountable. By disrupting fossil fuel financing, they create space for a just energy transition that prioritises communities and the environment.

How is Groundswell supporting this work?

Groundswell’s funding will enable Market Forces to expand their campaign targeting financial institutions backing the Santos Barossa gas project. This support will:

  • Provide resources for Traditional Owners and impacted communities to engage directly with corporate decision-makers and attend key events such as AGMs.

  • Run digital advertising campaigns to highlight the environmental and social harms of targeted fossil fuel projects.

  • Pressure banks, insurers, and super funds to withdraw support for destructive projects through research, media, and shareholder engagement.

  • Undermine financial and social licences for fossil fuel developments, delaying or cancelling projects and casting doubt on future proposals.
