What do Lock the Gate Alliance do?

Lock the Gate Alliance (LTGA) is leading the fight to protect land, water, and communities from coal and gas mining. With a focus on stopping new coal mine expansions in New South Wales, LTGA empowers communities to push back against the climate and environmental threats posed by fossil fuel projects.

This year, their efforts are centered on stopping the Hunter Valley Operations Continuation project, which alone would produce 1.16 billion tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. LTGA is working to dismantle outdated policies that favour coal approvals, ensure strong climate regulations, and mobilise regional communities to demand sustainable alternatives.

Why is this work important?

New South Wales is at a critical crossroads, with 16 proposed coal mine expansions that could result in emissions equivalent to nearly 17 times the state’s total annual emissions. These projects threaten iconic ecosystems, vulnerable communities, and Australia’s net-zero commitments. By empowering local voices and advocating for systemic change, LTGA is essential to stopping these projects and pushing for a community-led transition to renewable energy. Their work ensures that the climate and environmental risks of coal mining are not ignored in planning and policymaking.

How is Groundswell supporting this work?

Groundswell’s funding will amplify LTGA’s ability to mobilise communities and apply political pressure at a crucial moment. This support will:

  • Fund community tours to NSW Parliament and bus trips for volunteers to the Hunter Valley, enabling supporters to witness the impacts of coal projects and engage directly with MPs.

  • Develop and distribute promotional materials, including videos and online media, to raise awareness of the climate and community threats posed by coal expansions.

  • Commission expert reports and legal advice to scrutinise coal project approvals and strengthen advocacy for climate constraints on mining.

  • Support outreach to key decision-makers in electorates of influential ministers, ensuring that political leaders feel the pressure to reject harmful coal projects.
