What do IPO do?
The Indigenous Peoples Organisation (IPO) empowers Indigenous communities to develop and advocate for climate mitigation, adaptation, and capacity-building initiatives. By amplifying Indigenous voices at global platforms like COP29, IPO is advancing community-led climate solutions and promoting Indigenous rights on the international stage.
Why is this work important?
Indigenous communities are among the most affected by climate change, yet their traditional knowledge and leadership are often overlooked. IPO’s work addresses this gap by enabling community-driven solutions that protect lands, seas, and cultural heritage. By spotlighting Indigenous perspectives at COP29, IPO not only promotes sustainable local initiatives but also strengthens global recognition of Indigenous rights and the critical role of First Nations leadership in addressing the climate crisis.
How is Groundswell supporting this work?
Groundswell’s funding will enable IPO to build on their proven track record of Indigenous climate advocacy by:
Facilitate four community meetings to co-design place-based climate solutions, ensuring these strategies reflect local needs and aspirations.
Collaborate with academic experts to translate community initiatives into actionable business cases ready for funding and implementation.
Support two Indigenous representatives, including one from the Torres Strait and one from Kiribati, to present these initiatives at the Australia Pavilion at COP29, securing global support and funding.
Create a short film documenting these efforts to share with policymakers and civil society, further amplifying Indigenous leadership in climate action.
