What do HJA do?

The Hunter Jobs Alliance (HJA) is building community and political support for the responsible development of offshore wind in the Hunter region. By countering misinformation, advocating for worker and environmental protections, and fostering public trust, HJA is leading the way for a just transition to renewable energy in one of Australia’s most vital industrial regions.

Why is this work important?

Misinformation and well-funded opposition campaigns are threatening public support for offshore wind projects, undermining Australia’s climate and renewable energy targets. In the Hunter region, backlash from political and public opponents risks delaying critical offshore wind developments. HJA plays a pivotal role in bridging divides, promoting the economic and environmental benefits of offshore wind, and ensuring that workers and communities are central to this energy transition. Their work sets a blueprint for similar projects across Australia, helping to combat the climate crisis while delivering tangible benefits to local communities.

How is Groundswell supporting this work?

Groundswell’s funding will enhance HJA’s ability to advocate for offshore wind and climate action in the Hunter region by:

  • Supporting community outreach and public education initiatives to counter misinformation and build trust in offshore wind.

  • Collaborating with state and federal MPs to ensure robust policies and frameworks that prioritise worker, environment, and community benefits in wind development projects.

  • Mobilising grassroots coalitions, including unions, environmental groups, and local businesses, to amplify support for renewable energy.

  • Leveraging HJA’s credibility to promote positive narratives about offshore wind and the opportunities it brings for jobs and economic resilience in the Hunter.
