What do the Conservation Council of Western Australia do?

The Conservation Council of Western Australia (CCWA) is leading the fight against WA’s gas industry expansion, advocating for renewable energy alternatives and protecting the state’s natural heritage. By mobilising communities, influencing policymakers, and amplifying public outcry, CCWA is driving urgent action to halt the climate crisis fuelled by fossil gas projects.

Why is this work important?

Western Australia is a major exporter of fossil gas, with emissions that impact global climate and disproportionately harm vulnerable communities. Expanding the gas industry threatens iconic ecosystems like Ningaloo Reef and Scott Reef, intensifies climate impacts like heatwaves and bushfires, and undermines Australia’s net-zero commitments. CCWA’s work is critical to stopping this expansion, shifting public narratives, and paving the way for a renewable energy transition that prioritises community wellbeing and environmental protection.

How is Groundswell supporting this work?

Groundswell’s funding will bolster CCWA’s capacity to deliver impactful climate campaigns and build on their existing momentum. With this support, CCWA will:

  • Expand initiatives like Go Beyond Gas and Save Scott Reef, using media and events to increase public pressure on decision-makers.

  • Support grassroots action teams and local climate groups to engage MPs, raise awareness, and build local leadership in strategic electorates.

  • Provide expert advice and evidence-based submissions to influence state and federal decisions on fossil fuel projects.

  • Advocate for stronger climate policies and amplify climate champions in parliament to challenge pro-gas narratives and promote renewable energy alternatives.
